SUSTAINABILITY

Nile (Crocodylus Niloticus) crocodiles are classified by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as protected but not endangered. Kenya, along with 168 other nations, is a signatory to CITES. Kenya successfully applied to have their Nile crocodiles moved from CITES Appendix I to Appendix II.

KAZVRI LONDON strongly believes that the commercial trade of crocodile skins is beneficial to the conservation of the species and its local ecosystem. We work closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service to protect the wild population of crocodiles in a sustainable manner and are actively engaged in conservation efforts which include offering sanctuary to problem crocodiles.

KAZVRI LONDON is committed to ensuring crocodile populations are managed in an ecologically sustainable manner. We control quality of our crocodiles skins by only using skins from ethically sourced Crocodylus Niloticus harvested from our sister company Kazuri London Crocodile Farm, a CITES compliant farm.

Our stocks are replenished from two sources, eggs collected from the wild and eggs collected from our own breeders. Our eggs are mainly sourced from Tana river and Sabaki river, where crocodile population numbers have been studied in detail, confirming that ranching operations have had no negative effect on the wild populations. Our collecting of eggs and wild crocodiles in the wild is beneficial in controlling crocodile numbers and is not at a level that is detrimental to the survival of the Nile crocodile population in Kenya.

A separate annual permit for egg collection from the wild is required, allowing us to help Kenya Wildlife Services control the numbers of wild crocodiles. The areas of egg collection are zoned by KWS to allow for appropriate levels of protection and utilisation. Egg collection is tightly controlled through collection permits and the filing of annual returns. The annual egg collection is used by the KWS to monitor the wild crocodile populations and identify trends and problem areas.

Crocodile skins sold without the necessary documentation are the subject of illegal trading. Kazuri London Crocodile Farm is CITES approved and we provide our customers with information about every skin, its quality and a seal number for every skin consignment.

We are also fulfilling our obligations with The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), a government body in Kenya established to exercise general supervision and co-ordination over all matters relating to the environment. The Authority is the principal instrument of Government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment. NEMA is mandated by the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) no 8 of 1999, to administer Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

Kazuri London Crocodile Farm fully complies with its Environmental Impact obligations and is approved by NEMA.
